This set of standard are initiated by the German automotive industry (Verband des Automobilindustrie. The first VDA standard was for exchange of surface models. It was named VDAFS.. It has been supersede in between by a subset of IGES named VDA-??. Check for more information at DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung . Aside from this exchange standard, VDA also developed a standard part library standard : VDA-PS known afterwards as DIN 66304.

We mean here ASCII file format (files you can read with any text editor). Exchange means that there is not too much data lost in the transfer.
